USRA Tenders: Coal to Oil Conversion Kit

What the Kit Does

The main element of the "kit" is a oil-bunker mesh that's loaded atop the coal bunker, which hides evidence that the tender is a coal tender, making it more closely resemble an oil tender. The real railroads did basically the exact same thing when they converted coal tenders to oil.

To make basic use the kit, you'll need to do some editing in Content Manager. To make even better use of the kit, edit the source files in Gmax or simply load the source files in Gmax and use them as a starting point for you own oil-bunker. In either case, the source files have been sized and positioned so that they cover Ben's USRA tenders, hiding the coal bunker and most evidence that the tender is really a coal tender, so hopefully, they'll save you a little time and effort you'd otherwise spend trying to get things to line up correctly.

In you've never played around in Gmax (but wanted to), have a look at this YouTube video tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeSuS2gqtUM) that will walk you through installing and setting up Gmax for Trainz. The same YouTube user has several other Gmax tutorials that will get you started on the road to building your own neat stuff for Trainz.

Getting the Kit

Download the kit from Google Docs: http://docs.google.com/open?id=0B1GK_EZmbbY-ZGFTTmt1WXFvTHM

As stated, this is a very simple mesh. For those who wish to add more details, add/change textures, etc. to the mesh, I'm making the Gmax source files available (under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License). The Gmax source files are also available for downloading at Google Docs.

Assembling the Kit

The kit consists of a very simple mesh created in Gmax, plus associated texture files, etc.

You'll assemble the kit by changing the tender's configuration file (in Content Manger), adding the lines that will load the oil-bunker mesh as an attachment, which hides the coal bunker from view.

The files can be used to change the small and large USRA tenders created by Ben Neal, which can be download at Subpar Productions. The small USRA tender is used on the USRA light 2-8-2 and USRA light 2-10-2. The larger USRA tender is used on the USRA light 4-8-2 and USRA heavy 2-8-8-2 Mallet.

To follow along with the instructions below, you'll want to download the USRA light 2-8-2 and the USRA 2-8-8-2 Mallet. Once you've downloaded and installed these, open Content Manager and clone copies of "USRA Light 2-8-2 tender" and "USRA 2-8-8-2 tender".

Let's start with Ben's "USRA Light 2-8-2 tender". We'll be adding a reference to the file "oil-bunker-small.im", which is the mesh used with the small USRA tenders.

Edit the cloned copy of "USRA Light 2-8-2 tender" in Content Manager by choosing "edit in Explorer".

You'll need to copy the following files into the "usra_lmike_ten_body" folder:

oil-bunker-small.im
black2.tga
black2.texture

Next, open the config file in a text editor. You'll need to add the lines (similar to below) under the "mesh" section.

oilbunker
{
mesh "usra_lmike_ten_body/oil-bunker-small.im"
auto-create 1
}

We want to end up with a section that looks something like this (I've bolded the added lines):

mesh-table
{
default
{
mesh "usra_lmike_ten_body/usra_lmike_ten_body.im"
auto-create 1
}

waterhatch
{
mesh "usra_lmike_ten_body/hatch.im"
anim "usra_lmike_ten_body/hatch.kin"
auto-create 1
}

oilbunker
{
mesh "usra_lmike_ten_body/oil-bunker-small.im"
auto-create 1
}

water
{
mesh "usra_lmike_ten_body/loads/water.im"
anim "usra_lmike_ten_body/loads/water.kin"
auto-create 1
}
}

Next, since we don't want to load the coal animation, we'll need to delete the following lines:

load
{
mesh "usra_lmike_ten_body/loads/load.im"
anim "usra_lmike_ten_body/loads/load.kin"
auto-create 1
}

Save the edited config file and "commit" it. Run Trainz and go to Railyard and you should see the new oil-bunker sitting atop the coal bunker, hiding it from view.

Now, let's edit Ben's "USRA 2-8-8-2 tender".

Edit the cloned copy of "USRA 2-8-8-2 tender" in Content Manager by choosing "edit in Explorer".

Next, copy the following files into the "usra_hmallet_ten_body" folder:

oil-bunker.im
black2.tga
black2.texture

Next, open the config file in a text editor. You'll need to add the lines (similar to below) under the "mesh" section.

oilbunker
{
mesh "usra_lmike_ten_body/oil-bunker.im"
auto-create 1
}

You don't need the coal animation, so delete the following lines:

load
{
mesh "usra_hmallet_ten_body/loads/load.im"
anim "usra_hmallet_ten_body/loads/load.kin"
auto-create 1
}

You should end up with a mesh section that looks something like this:

mesh-table
{
default
{
mesh "usra_hmallet_ten_body/usra_hmallet_ten_body.im"
auto-create 1
}

shadow
{
mesh "usra_hmallet_ten_body/shadow.im"
}

waterhatch
{
mesh "usra_hmallet_ten_body/hatch.im"
anim "usra_hmallet_ten_body/hatch.kin"
auto-create 1
}

oilbunker
{
mesh "usra_hmallet_ten_body/oil-bunker.im"
auto-create 1
}

water
{
mesh "usra_hmallet_ten_body/loads/water.im"
anim "usra_hmallet_ten_body/loads/water.kin"
auto-create 1
}
}

Save the edited config file and "commit" it. Run Trainz and go to Railyard and you should see the new oil-bunker sitting atop the coal bunker, hiding it from view.

If It Didn't Work

Double-check the instructions. If you're still having problem, post a message in this thread and I (and hopefully others) will try to help.
